Hiring Slows

August 25, 2025

  • 1 in 5 U.S. employers plan to cut back on hiring in late 2025—twice last year’s rate. It now takes workers an average of 24 weeks to find a new job, about a month longer than in 2024. 1

  • Wellesley College became the first U.S. college with annual costs over $100K. That being said, last academic year, the average undergraduate student in the U.S. paid about $30.8K after aid, with 27% covered by scholarships and grants. 2

  • 25.6% of Zillow listings had a price cut in June (vs. 11.4% in 2021). Cuts were highest in Denver, Phoenix, and Raleigh (35%+), lowest in Milwaukee, Hartford, and New York (<15%). 2

  • Defense firms are booming amid a rise in geopolitical conflict—the Global X Defense Tech ETF is up 63% in 2025. Even excluding Palantir (its biggest holding), the average defense stock in the index is still up 15%. *3
