Age and Financial Planning

May 11, 2026

  • Americans are living longer than many plan for: a healthy 65-year-old married couple has a 50% chance one spouse reaches 94 and a 25% chance one reaches 98, yet 52% do not adequately factor longevity into retirement planning. 1

  • U.S. households lead the world in stock ownership at 55%. This is higher than both developed countries, such as the United Kingdom (33%) and Japan (15%), as well as developing nations, such as China (7%) and India (6%). 2

  • Spirit Airlines’ collapse continues to reshape an airline industry already pressured by higher fuel costs. Domestic airfares are up 36% this year, but the largest carriers (Delta, American, Southwest, and United) still dominate the market with a combined 69% share. 3

  • The S&P 500’s rally approached record highs again last week. Since 1960, the index has historically gained ~12% in the year following a record high. *4
